Hi all!  I have been the box tops coordinator for 3 years at my daughter's elementary school.  I have read these posts over the years and have decided to share with you some of the things I have learned.

1. We have over 700 kids so grade level or individual competitions are out of the question for us.

2. Our students (therefore the parents) LOVE our Box Top Shop.  I usually have 4 per year during recess.  When I shop I try to buy items so that I make one third of the cost of the item.  Our kids LOVE food items like blow pops, clearance toys and hair accessories, happy meal toys (I know! FREE! We sell for 5 bt) and as a special treat for our fourth graders, cold bottles of sodas!!!  Our parents also donate items for the shop.  Some of the students save box tops to use for the shop only.  Last year I had kids with 500 box tops to use....even gave box top change!  LOL

3. I try to have collection sheet contests every other month between shops.  On PTOtoday . com I found printable "boys vs. girls" sheets. I got the kids revved up during morning announcements with the contest winners getting an all pink or all blue day.  I do not ever keep track of teachers or grades as it is too hard with so many students.  Girls sheets are pink, boys are blue.  Two collection boxes are set up in a central location.  I usually go in once a week to count and show the kids on a chart who is winning. Lots of fun and FREE!!!!!

4. Another collection sheet we have used successfully is team contests.  Our area has two rival college teams that the kids choose from in the same manner as above.  Winning team wears team spirit shirt day.  FREE!!!

I hope these ideas inspire you to help your area schools.  Have a great school year!!!!

Brandy,

Thank you for the input. I am new to the coordinating and I like your ideas. We have a brand new school with 600 student body to start this September. May I ask what your toatal collection in $ for last year was with your plan.

Brandy,

It could be reasonable to collect an average of 50 box tops per student (1 per week). With 600 students (times 50 box tops) it would be a goal of 30,000 box tops or $3,000. Some families with several children could have their relatives, neighbors, coworkers or family friends helping them by saving box tops. Your school cafeteria could be a good source of box tops. After-school programs could be another source. They serve gogurt, fruit roll-ups, cereal, etc.
