Happy Earth Day! If you didn't know or just forgot, today is Earth Day. In fact, it is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and we're excited to share with you some of the ways the Box Tops team participates in making our world a more sustainable and healthy living environment.
Earth Day was founded over 40 years ago with a mission to “broaden and diversify the environmental movement worldwide, and to mobilize it as the most effective vehicle for promoting a healthy, sustainable environment.” The Earth Day Network has a global reach with more than 20,000 partners and organizations in 190 countries. More than 1 billion people participate in Earth Day activities, making it the largest secular civic event in the world. To learn more, visit www.earthday.org.
And yes the Box Tops Team members are definitely among those 1 billion participants. Here are a some of the ways that members of our team help:
- Compost
- Use public transportation
- Recycle
- Buy organic or locally grown food products
- Bike whenever possible
- Use reusable bags and containers
- Go to the library instead of buying books
While we can't do all of those things every single day, collectively our team tries to do them whenever possible because we know that every tiny act matters. And support for Earth Day doesn't stop with the Box Tops Team. One example is the Green Giant brand; Green Giant has long been committed to reducing its carbon footprint and to celebrate this year's Earth Day, it is giving $200,000 to The Nature Conservancy to help fund innovative projects that will encourage greener farming practices. To learn more, please find the press release here. Another General Mills brand known for its green practices is Cascadian Farms. To celebrate Earth Day, they are pledging to donate up to $40,000 to the Organic Farming Research Foundation with your help. For every pledge they receive from their Facebook fans to live greener, they will donate $1. We encourage you to check out their Facebook page and pledge for a great cause!
