Time for Adult-to-Adult Conversation!
02/02/2009
Get creative with your time. I belonged to a moms’ coffee group when my youngest was in preschool, but as the kids grew we saw less of each other. Last year several of us signed up for a five-day-a-week boot camp at the local Y, and it has been awesome working out together and catching up.
Socialize in groups. My husband and I are in a couples’ dinner group that meets every other month, and I also play cards with women in my neighborhood. Other women I know meet once a month for “article club.” Who has time to read a whole book?
Host a themed party every year. Entertaining can be exhausting, but once a year is doable. My girlfriend, Stacie, hosts an annual Flag Day party. She invites five new couples each year—even people she has met only once but wants to get to know better. Use school time for yourself. Kindergarten takes up at least a half-day if not longer, so sign up for a class. I started taking computer classes at the local Apple store to learn how to make photo cards, and I have met some terrific moms. We have coffee together afterward.
Plan girl getaways. Every other month, some girlfriends and I “run away” to a nearby city or neighboring state to shop and relax. It’s only one day and night, but the laughs will keep you smiling for weeks.
